Punjab Bioenergy + Solar

1GW Biomass + 3GW Solar clean energy projects in Northern India

Project Details

Developing biomass and solar clean energy projects in Punjab, India to offset Delhi’s severe air quality crisis partially caused by the local Punjab agricultural process of rice paddy stubble burning reversing the environmental consequences throughout the region

Socio Economic Highlights
Proven Technology

NGP will deploy thermo-chemical conversion processes such as gasification and thermal conversion like incineration with state-of-art emission control. Both the technologies are proven and decompose organic matter under high temperature

Base Load Energy

Biomass is a fuel that can generate baseload renewable electricity. Basis estimated availability of 20 million MT of rice straw as government guaranteed feedstock delivered to each plant allows for up to 2 GW of biomass plant operations in Punjab

Environmental Benefits

The project will reverse the environmental consequences of stubble burning, allow for a massive value creating economic opportunity to exist for Punjab farmers and will solve the rice stubble burning issue throughout Punjab, Haryana and the National Capital Region

Economic Growth

The construction/operations and the procurement, transportation and storage of paddy is expected to create over a half a million new jobs in Punjab. Substantial trickle-down employment adds to the total job count. The project will also allow for a massive value creating economic opportunity to exist for Punjab farmers as they will receive income, a tipping fee, for rice stubble collected and transported from their farm by the government which will increased farm productivity and investment in agricultural implements, labor, fertilizer and reliable energy produced by the project

Governmental Support

NGP is considered a power development priority by emerging market governments with a majority of power output contracted under long-term Governmental PPAs/FiTs

Ancillary Benefits

The project will have ancillary benefits allowing other industries to thrive because the government aims to boost availability of rice stubble feedstock with more affordable and reliable transport methods, to manufacture rice stubble briquettes for fuel and to enable local biogas, bioethanol, or bio-CNG production capability
